Overview of IEC Registration

What is Import Export Code (IEC)?

Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India . It is mandatory for any individual or business entity looking to engage in import or export of goods and services from India . Without IEC, customs clearance is not possible, and shipments cannot be processed .

The IEC is a lifetime-valid, PAN-based registration that requires no renewal. It enables businesses to avail benefits under various export promotion schemes, claim duty drawback, and access foreign exchange (FEMA) compliance . In today's globalised economy, IEC is the fundamental gateway for Indian businesses to participate in international trade, expand markets, and compete globally .
