It is mandatory for any individual or business entity looking to engage in import or export of goods and services from India . Without IEC, customs clearance is not possible, and shipments cannot be processed .

Go to the official DGFT portal at dgft.gov.in and navigate to the IEC registration section .
Complete the online application form with business details, PAN, and contact information .
Upload PAN card, address proof, bank certificate, and other required documents in prescribed format .
Pay the prescribed fee (currently ₹500) online via credit card, debit card, or net banking .
DGFT verifies your application and documents. In case of discrepancies, clarification may be sought .
Upon successful verification, your IEC certificate (10-digit code) is issued electronically, valid for lifetime .
Important Points:
Lifetime Validity: IEC has no expiry date and is valid for lifetime unless surrendered or cancelled .
One IEC Per PAN: Only one IEC is issued per PAN, regardless of the number of businesses .
Mandatory Update: IEC must be updated every year (between April-June) with the DGFT to remain active .
